The purpose of this correlational study was to determine whether and to what degree a relationship existed between perceived leadership style and department managers' intention to quit in retail grocery in northeastern Utah. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) was completed by department managers to measure perceptions of leadership style of store managers. The Staying or Leaving (SLI) index was administered to department managers to measure intent to stay. The data were analyzed using Kendall's tau-b coefficient to show the direction and the strength of the relationships. There was a negative relationship between a department manager's perception of the store manager's transformational leadership style and that department manager's intent to leave the job, taub = (197) -.24, p ≤.01. There was a weak relationship between transactional leadership style and intent to leave which was non-significant, taub = (197) -.10, p > .05. There was a weak statistically significant relationship between laissez-faire leadership style and intent to leave and statistically significant, taub = (197) .15, ≤ .01. Additionally, the nine sub scales of leadership were correlated with intent to stay and job satisfaction. The study results showed that leadership style does have a statistically significant relationship with subordinates' job satisfaction and intent to stay on the job. Future studies may want to look at all subordinates working in retail grocery; as this study solely focused on department managers. Keywords: Transformational Leadership, Transactional Leadership, Laissez-faire Leadership, Good Leaders, Bad Leaders, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, Retail Grocery, Job Satisfaction, Turnover Intention.
