The well-established relationship between body dissatisfaction and the internalization of the media in the United States has not yet been thoroughly investigated among Eastern cultures. This cross-sectional study investigated the differences in the internalization of the media and mindfulness practices on eating disorder risk and body image of young adult women in the Philippines as compared to the similar population in the United States. Sixty-two young adult women (18-29 years old) residing in the Philippines completed a demographic questionnaire, Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire 3, Eating Disorder Inventory 3, Physical Appearance Comparison Scale, Physical Appearance State Trait Anxiety Scale, and the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. Sixty-one young adult women (19-29 years old) residing in the United States had already completed the measures as part of a related study. Data were analyzed by using t-tests, Spearman's correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple regressions at the p < .05 statistical significance threshold. Results indicated Filipinas experienced more anxiety related to their physical appearance and had a higher eating disorder risk compared to female Americans. Further, the American sample scored significantly higher on their tendency to practice the mindfulness technique of non-judging of inner experience compared to Filipinas. The combination of the SATAQ-3, PACS, PASTAS, and FFMQ accounted for 63% of the variance in EDI-3 for the Filipino sample. Even though the Filipino and American samples were essentially identical in the likelihood that they compare themselves to others, the American sample was more likely to internalize pressures by the media to physically look like an athletic idealized body type. On the other hand, the Filipino sample was more likely to view the media as an inlet for obtaining information about culturally ideal body types (such as related to a preference for a smaller body). These findings indicate that the internalization of the media is culturally bound.
