While research is beginning to grasp the phenomena of intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual minorities and transgender people have been excluded from the conversation. Study of IPV has begun in the United States, but the principal investigator (PI) found little research information in English language for IPV victimization of transgender individuals in Thailand. The purpose of this thesis is to review the types of IPV experienced by transgender people in Thailand, how gender identity and expression play a role in the dynamic of IPV, social services available and barriers to those services for transgender victims, and suggestions for improvement of social service delivery. Using a semi-structured interview, the PI interviewed staff of domestic violence service providers, LGBTQ rights groups, and others experienced in addressing this population. Data were subjected to open coding, axial coding, and put into a matrix for comparison in order to identify any themes or patterns. Subjects reported verbal and financial abuse as the most common forms of victimization of transgender individuals. Subjects could not identify any social services specifically for transgender individuals experiencing IPV, and they identified societal or structural and intrapersonal barriers that would prevent help seeking. Subjects recommended gender sensitivity training of service providers and inclusion of LGBTQ into Thai Law. Emerging themes around IPV victimization of transgender individuals were the strict gender hegemony of Thai culture, societal stigmatization, and internalized transphobia or selfoppression. Interlaced, these themes explain the absence of a framework or social construction for understanding IPV victimization of transgender individuals, making the issue invisible.
