This study considers the experience of gay Catholic men in relation to the Church. It is an examination of the needs of gay men for belonging within the experience of Church, and the need of the Church for the gifts, wisdom, and insight of gay men. The fundamental stumbling block, the harsh rhetoric of the Church in relation to gay men, is discussed through the literature that focuses on the transdisciplinary interrelationship of discourse among Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience.

This heuristic study is the contemplative engagement with the lived experiences of 12 gay Catholic men who are committed to the life of the Church. Their stories reflect their pain and experiences of exclusion caused by the Church's rhetoric, which they transcend through their relationship with the experience of God, maturity, finding a Church community of belonging, and participation in mission. As a heuristic study, these stories, lived experiences, have been retold through the contemplative lens of the researcher. It is the result of many years of reflection, the integration of the Franciscan Tradition, and the reality of the researcher as a gay man, friar, and priest.

This study engages the recent Papal Encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si, with consideration of the ecology of the Church through the experiences of gay men. Sustainability for the Church calls for greater openness, diversity, and conversion of heart, especially in the area of human sexuality. The gay man's gift as realized in these participants' experiences, their spiritual journeys, and their perseverance, in combination with the sacramental life, the shared community, and the engagement in mission have the potential to create a dynamic, sustainable Church.
