ATM skimming is a sophisticated crime which has emerged to become a large problem for banks and cardholders alike. ATM skimming losses have reached multi-billions of dollars per year. The research in this paper set out to examine the ATM skimming problem and determine how the EMV chip card will fare against ATM skimming attacks. After looking at past statistics it was determined that Europe and Canada did experience significant declines in ATM and card fraud in their countries after implementing the EMV card. Unfortunately, their fraud did not simply end but instead moved outside of their respective countries to places with less secure credit card practices. ATMs are no longer the only attack vector for skimming criminals as new venues of skimming have recently emerged with skimming devices now being found on gas pumps. These devices are equipped with sophisticated technology able to transmit stolen credit card numbers wirelessly via Bluetooth and can be powered indefinitely. Ultimately research has shown that the EMV chip is promising technology with clear advantages over the mag-stripe in terms of security and fraud. When the United States and the rest of the world are able to remove the mag-stripe from cards the true advantages of the technology will emerge. For now, the United States should continue to focus on completing the transition to EMV chip card and begin aggressively combatting gas pump skimming.
