Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis explores the geography of park quality by performing observations of an urban, urban periphery, and suburban park. This is carried out using a combination of two research instruments: the Environmental Assessment of Public Recreation Spaces (EAPRS) and the Physical Resource Activity Assessment (PARA) (Saelens, et al., 2006; Lee, et al., 2005). These observations are supported by a literature review outlining the benefits of parks and the significance of park quality to promoting physical activity and interviews with local park officials. This exploratory study provides insight into the maintenance and quality of three parks in varying geographic locations in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area. The research suggests that there are areas of particular concern to maintaining park quality. Physical problems of incivilities, such as graffiti require proactive solutions, and lack of maintenance staff proved to be a consistent problem for the three parks. These findings and future related research may be important for city planners, public health officials, and policymakers attempting to encourage park use and/or evaluate the status of parks in different localities.
