This thesis explores whether a positive or negative relationship exists between democracy and terrorism. The methodology employs a summarized time series data of terrorism incidents from 1969-1997 and polity data during the same period. Does an increase in the level of democracy reduce the level of terrorism? A time series approach is used to statistically examine the relationship between democracy and terrorism. This study finds that there is a negative relationship between democracy and terrorism. In other words, more democracy results in less terrorism, because a more democratic country leads to a less disgruntled society that is less apt to take up arms. This paper reexamines the theoretical links between democracy and terrorism. This contradicts many similar studies that find a positive relationship between democracy and terrorism.
