In this dissertation I investigate the relationship of astrology, prophecy and poetry in the context of Quattrocento Naples. I focus on Giovanni Pontano, and on his contacts with Marsilio Ficino, Ludovico Lazzarelli, Jacopo Sannazaro and Giles of Viterbo. Based on a close reading of Pontano's astrological, rhetorical and poetic texts, I propose to conceptualize his mode of thinking within the complementary notions of conjecture and inspiration. This discovery allows me to cross reference and compare Pontano's usage of these terms with other texts of the time in order to further illustrate and understand their meaning and implications. My argument is that Giovanni Pontano's texts were responding to and critical of the diffusion of platonic and hermetic themes among the members of his intellectual community.

This dissertation is divided into two sections and each of them is divided into two chapters. In the first section, I propose that Giovanni Pontano and Marsilio Ficino disagreed because they developed opposite definitions of conjecture and inspiration in their works as interpreters and cultural translators of Ptolemy and Plato. In the second section I focus on two specific "encounters" between astrology and prophecy in Quattrocento Naples, and I propose to relate them with the figure of Gilles of Viterbo. In particular, I investigate Lazzarelli's failed attempt at installing himself within Pontano's community as a divinely inspired prophet, and Jacopo Sannazaro's dismissal of Giovanni Pontano's theories on conjecture and inspiration in his last poem De Partu Virginis.

Methodologically, this dissertation is a case study that seeks to combine history of literature and intellectual history. I examine these authors' modes of thinking at the light of the histories of their libraries and of their contribution to the reception of Ptolemy, Plato and the Hermetica in Quattrocento Italy. I explore these authors' mutual relationships by cross referencing biographies, textual histories and literary representations found in narratives and dialogues by using concepts such as Christopher Celenza's epiphenomenon of writing and Michail Bakthin's ideologeme .
