This correlational study examined the relationship between personality traits and level of burnout experienced in licensed clinical psychologists. Burnout, a work-related syndrome, occurs in professions where there are intense interactions with others. Consequences are serious, resulting in impaired job performance and physical and psychological difficulties for the psychologist. Literature has focused on the level of burnout experienced and ways to reduce or cope with burnout once it occurs; however it has not addressed the development of the burnout syndrome and what role personality traits play in that development. This research utilized the five factor model of personality and Maslach's theory of burnout as the theoretical foundations. The key research question of this study was to identify personality traits that predispose individuals to higher levels of burnout. Using the survey research method, participants completed a demographics form, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory. Data were analyzed using correlational analysis along with ANOVA. Findings indicated a significant correlation among the personality traits Neuroticism and Agreeableness and the burnout dimension Emotion Exhaustion. Years of experience as a psychologist was correlated with level of personal accomplishment, and ANOVA demonstrated that the setting in which a psychologist worked is related to the dimension of Emotional Exhaustion. These findings suggest that certain personality traits may predispose someone to burnout syndrome. These findings help clarify the role personality plays in the burnout syndrome by helping to identify psychologists at greater risk of burnout and allowing earlier intervention. This enhances social change by potentially keeping them healthier, more satisfied, and better available to serve the public.
