Among the most publicly visible endeavors within the purview of the public administrator are crime fighting and public planning. Goals of minimizing crime and maximizing the utility of public spaces for the community are fundamental elements of municipal and county public administration. This study researched one potential area of overlap within public planning and crime fighting by studying the possible link between publicly available Internet usage and certain crime rates. Routine Activities Theory (RAT) provides the theoretical basis for the research and the emerging focus on Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is leveraged to provide an avenue of practical application for the research. Through multiple regression analysis, this cross-sectional study of states evaluates the relationship between use of publicly available Internet and selected crime rates. The study found inadequate evidence to support any statistically significant link between the use of publicly available Internet and the violent and property crime rates at the state level.
