This cross-sectional, multivariate, predictive survey research study about workplace bullying of faculty members in higher education settings answered three research questions about the relationships between exposure to negative acts in the workplace, civic moral disengagement, response to workplace dissatisfaction, and workplace aggression tolerance. One of the questions controlled for gender. A fourth research question investigated the negative life impact on victims. The sample consisted of 162 respondents. Analyses relied on the number of responses with answers to the items pertaining to all the constructs in a specific research question, generally between 119-162. Hypothesis testing consisted of multinomial regression analyses, linear regression analyses, and independent-samples t tests. Civic moral disengagement and workplace aggression tolerance significantly predicted subjectively perceived status as a victim, as well as objectively measured exposure to workplace bullying. The moral disengagement rationalizations distortion of consequences, advantageous comparison, dehumanization, and euphemistic labeling were significantly associated with exposure to workplace bullying. Exit and neglect response styles were positively associated with exposure, while loyalty was negatively associated with exposure. For women, dehumanization and moral justification predicted cynicism, and voice was negatively associated with civic moral disengagement and workplace aggression tolerance. Negative life impact was significant for both targets and witnesses, indicating that respondents in both categories were victimized by workplace bullying. Both targets and witnesses experienced an increase in suspiciousness. These results suggest that moral disengagement rationalizations, workplace aggression tolerance, and increased suspiciousness were important and related contributing factors, and that voice response style played a key role in enabling or counteracting the workplace bullying of instructors in higher education settings.
