Anxiety, one of the most prevalent mental illnesses among children, and anxiety problems can have detrimental effects on functioning in childhood and into adulthood. Aversive classical conditioning has been used to explain how human emotional responses, including fear and anxiety, develop. Various risk and protective factors can influence the development of fear and anxiety in children. Latent inhibition, a process that involves exposure prior to classical conditioning, is often cited as a possible protective factor against the development of fear and anxiety symptoms. On the other hand, the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) proposed by Gray (1990) may act as a risk factor depending on one's BIS sensitivity. The BIS modulates the internal experience of anxiety elicited by external aversive stimuli, and an individual with high BIS sensitivity experiences a great deal of anxiety in response to aversive stimuli. The current study examined the interaction between BIS sensitivity and latent inhibition to discover if the use of exposure prior to aversive classical conditioning produced different effects for participants with varying BIS sensitivity. The participants of this study included 50 children between 8 and 10 years old, recruited from a suburban Chicago elementary school. Results indicated preexposure effectively prevented the development of aversive associations for participants with low BIS sensitivity, but it was not effective for participants with high BIS sensitivity. These findings were more pronounced when implicit measures of preference, rather than explicit, were used. Implications of these results for prevention and treatment of anxiety, as well as future research topics, are discussed.
