There is increasing evidence that individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) display abnormalities in emotion regulation and cognitive control that are significantly associated with important clinical outcomes such as vocational and social functioning. Impairments in general cognitive control and emotion regulation may share an underlying neuropathology, with evidence for prefrontal function contributing to both processes. In healthy individuals, there is evidence that increasing negative affect via reappraisal is associated with enhanced subsequent cognitive control; however, it is currently unclear whether attempts to regulate emotion have a direct effect on subsequent cognitive control processes in schizophrenia. The present study sought to examine whether attempts to up- and down-regulate negative emotion have differential effects on subsequent cognitive control in a sample of outpatients diagnosed with SZ ( n = 30) and demographically matched healthy controls (CN; n = 29).

Participants completed a combined emotion regulation and cognitive control task in which numerical Stroop trials were presented immediately after unpleasant or neutral images that were either up-regulated via reappraisal, down-regulated via reappraisal, or passively viewed. The electroencephalogram was recorded while participants performed the Stroop-Regulation task and event related potentials (ERPs) were used to index emotion regulation effectiveness (late positive potential) and cognitive control (sustained potential). Both CN and SZ evidenced comparable neurophysiological reactivity to unpleasant stimuli during the unpleasant passive viewing condition. Although CN demonstrated neurophysiological evidence of effective up- and down-regulation of negative emotion via reappraisal, SZ only showed effective up-regulation of negative emotion. Additionally, CN displayed neurophysiological evidence of enhanced cognitive control (SP amplitude) following decrease trials. However, SZ failed to show a similar enhancing effect. Neurophysiological indices of emotion regulation and cognitive control were not associated with poor functional outcome in individuals with schizophrenia. These results may suggest an under-recognized but important role of emotion regulation ability in the cognitive symptoms observed in SZ. Results of this study may also provide evidence to support the implementation of novel treatments for the cognitive symptoms of SZ.
