Obesity and healthcare-related issues continue to increase on a consistent basis. The prevalence of obesity is on the rise in Puerto Rico and the United States, which has led many health professionals to find ways to improve individual and group health interventions. Health coaching has been successful in increasing weight management self-efficacy in obese individuals. Health coaching can be a viable tool to reduce, if not reverse, the obesity epidemic.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effects of a 8-week health coaching intervention in obese individuals from Puerto Rico. A pretest-post test design using a weight management self-efficacy scale helped the researcher evaluate the effect of the coaching sessions. Results were analyzed for relationships between the health coaching intervention and weight management self-efficacy, and if body image and self-esteem had an effect in the weight management self-efficacy post-test. Some statistically significant changes were seen in participants, which support further exploration within a larger sample of obese individuals.
