METHODS: A survey was developed and conducted through the website www.surveymonkey.com and made available to participants through a URL link that was attached to an email. The survey included 12 items; including 10 quantitative and two qualitative questions. A total of 38 surveys were sent out to employees at LTC facilities in the Central New York region.

RESULTS: Researchers collected 15 completed surveys. Results indicated that multiple methods of animal interactions are utilized by the responding facilities (86%). A majority of responding facilities (93.3%) reported seeing three or more benefits with the use of animals amongst the staff, residents and families involved. The use of animal interactions in other LTC facilities was recommended by 100% of the responding facilities. The majority of participants responded that they would like to increase their use of animals at their facility.

CONCLUSION: Animal interactions within LTC facilities are reported to provide numerous benefits for residents and are highly recommended by staff members. Animal interactions have the potential to provide meaningful experiences for residents. This information can help healthcare professionals or others working with the population living in LTC create or tailor their own animal interaction programs to best meet the needs of residents.
