The purpose of this master's project was to propose a college summer and academic program intended to improve the transition to college for first generation college students (FGCS), while providing FGCS an opportunity to learn valuable skills associated with college success. The literature discussed emphasized a need for postsecondary institutions to discover new and innovative ways to support FGCS overcome unique challenges experienced by this population. With more FGCS entering higher education for greater opportunities for personal and financial success, postsecondary institutions need to begin to identify other ways to support greater levels of persistence and degree completion among FGCS. The proposed on-campus program recognizes the benefits of using experiential learning theory, solution focused brief therapy, and gestalt therapy to support FGCS transition to college and build greater self-awareness, selfefficacy, and other skills associated with college success.
