The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between self-esteem, exercise, and fitspo images of the ultra-fit ideal. The study utilized an experimental post-test only control group design with cross-sectional data collection. Young adult females (N = 174), ages 18-35 who exercise at least once per week completed an online survey on exercise behavior (International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ) as well as information on their exposure to television and magazines before being exposed to one of three types of images (fitspo images or neutral images which were average weighted models or gym equipment) and finally completed assessments of body image (Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, BESAA) and physical self-concept (Physical Self Description Questionnaire, PSDQ). There was a significant linear relationship between exercise and both physical self-concept and body image. However, no significant differences between the fitspo-image group and the combined control (neutral and equipment images) groups in body-image, physical self-concept, or the relationship between exercise and body image and physical self-concept were found. Possible limitations of the experimental manipulation in ability to mimic naturalistic exposure and directions for future research are discussed.
