Bullying among school children is an issue that has the potential to cross age, gender, cultural, and developmental boundaries. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are bullied at a rate much higher than their typically developing peers. An extensive review of the literature revealed a gap in the current research and practice of effective bullying treatment interventions for children with ASD. Principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), such as repetition, structure, and visual supports have the most empirical support for teaching children with ASD. In addition, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been shown to provide a foundation for successful evidenced based bullying prevention/intervention programs for typically developing children. This dissertation presents a needs assessment and program development study aiming to address bullying prevention in children with ASD who attend mainstream schools. The results of this study concluded in the development of Compass, a Bullying Prevention and Treatment Program for Children with ASD in mainstream schools. This program is unique in that it ties together empirically supported interventions for both ASD and bullying to address the unique learning characteristics of children with ASD in understanding and navigating bullying behavior in mainstream schools.
