This study is a cross-national analysis of anomie theory. The primary data used in this analysis are derived from the 1995 World Values Survey and the publications by the United Nations Organization. Using the hierarchical linear modeling method (HLM) this study uncovers that at the individual-level, all three demographic variables, gender, age, and marital status, are significant predictors of anomie. Greater confidence in authority tends to reduce anomie at the individual-level. In addition, several economic-related variables at both the individual- and national-levels show significant effects on anomie. Among all the independent variables, "nation" (used to measure the effect of rapid social change) at the national-level, has the strongest effect on anomie. This study also supports the hypothesis that anomie occurs when individuals place greater emphasis on monetary success and less emphasis on legitimate means. The effects of the two variables, "views on less emphasis on money and material possessions" and "belief in hard work," are in the predicted direction. Furthermore, this study found that anomie is endemic in every society. The mean level of anomie in the United States is not as high as predicted by Merton, which suggests that there might have been a "value shift" in the United States may indicate that the "American Dream" is gradually losing its money-driven nature.
