Gratitude has recently been identified in psychological literature as a trait and a character strength correlated with resilience, psychological health, and subjective well being. Interventions designed to increase levels of gratitude have shown promising results and positive related outcomes, such as improved affect, reduced depression, and increased physical activity. Interestingly, psychologists have given little practical consideration the integration of gratitude-based interventions into psychotherapy. The current dissertation critically examined twelve empirical studies of gratitude interventions. The purpose of the evaluation was to examine how well these interventions work to induce gratitude and effect positive changes in variables such as affect, subjective well-being, and physical health. Two interventions - a written listing exercise and a gratitude letter-writing exercise - received the most empirical support and demonstrated improvement in mood, depressive symptoms, and reported happiness. Importantly, moderating variables such as dispositional gratitude, baseline positive affect, and level of motivation influenced individuals' response to the interventions. Implications for treatment selection and implementation are discussed, and suggestions for future clinical research are considered.
