The main purpose of this study is to bring together sufficient information on the taxonomic history and biology of Aster section Patentes to better understand the relationships and limits of the section and the taxa, and to provide keys and descriptions of the taxa for reliable identification. Included in this treatment are discussions of nomenclatural history, chromosome numbers and karyotypes, morphological variation, distribution and ecology, reproduction, sectional and species relationships, and taxonomy. Three species are recognized--Aster phlogifolius Muhl., Aster georgianus Alexander, and Aster patens Ait., the latter with three varieties--var. gracilis Hooker, var. patentissimus (Lindl.) T. & G., and the typical var. patens.

Chromosome counts, based on seedling root tips, are reported from 49 populations of Aster section Patentes and the related section Grandiflori (A. grandiflorus L., A. novae-angliae L., A. oblongifolius Nutt.). All of the taxa investigated have numbers based on x = 5, with counts ranging from 2n = 10 to 2n = 60, placing these taxa in the smallest of the three major chromosome groups in Aster.

The same basic chromosome morphology is evident in diploid (2n = 10) A. patens, A. novae-angliae, and A. oblongifolius. This chromosome set is duplicated in tetraploid (2n = 20) A. patens and A. phlogifolius, decaploid (2n = 50) A. georgianus, and dodecaploid (2n = 60 + B's) A. grandiflorus. Accessory chromosomes are reported for 5 of the 36 populations of A. patens sampled.

Field observations, population samples, herbarium specimen surveys, and uniform environment studies of transplants, seedlings, and achenes, provide a basis for discussions of morphological, reproductive, and ecological relationships. These considerations, along with the chromosomal information, indicate that the three species accepted in Aster section Patentes represent three different kinds of plant groups, which can be described as follows: (1) A. patens--a wide-ranging, morphologically and cytologically variable group, which can be divided into three geographic subgroups. (a) var. patens--a tetraploid group of the eastern U.S. (b) var. patentissimus--a tetraploid Interior Highland group, crossable with the eastern variety, but showing regional involucral differences. (c) var. gracilis--a predominantly diploid group of the southwest, the diploids non-crossable with tetraploid A. patens, and showing regional differences in involucre and plant size. (2) A. phlogifolius--an Appalachian tetraploid group, crossable with tetraploid A. patens, but with differences in flowering period and achene germination, and with discontinuities in vegetative, involucral, and floral features. (3) A. georgianus--a decaploid, essentially Piedmont group, non-crossable with tetraploid A. patens, often growing with them, but with differences in vegetative reproduction and flowering period, and discontinuities in vegetative, involucral, and floral features.

A phylogenetic discussion emphasizes the problematic origin of A. georgianus; circumstantial evidence points to a possible complex ancestry involving A. patens and A. grandiflorus.

The study concludes with a taxonomic treatment including descriptions, diagnostic keys, and synonymies, followed by lists of associated species, herbaria consulted, representative specimens, and a literature citation.
