Self-compassion involves three components that are demonstrated during times of suffering or failure: a) self-kindness, b) common humanity, and c) mindfulness (Neff, 2003b; Neff & Tirch, 2013). Research suggests that self-compassion is a positive attitude toward the self that enhances mental health factors, life satisfaction, optimism, and overall health and well-being (Barnard & Curry, 2011; Neff, 2003b; Raes, 2010). This project aimed to more thoroughly examine the protective potential of self-compassion, hypothesizing it to be a more powerful predictor of emotional resilience, positive affect, psychological flexibility, and life satisfaction than self-esteem. Anonymous participants (n=139) were electronically administered assessments measuring constructs associated with mental health, including self-compassion, self-esteem, resilience, positive affect, psychological flexibility, and satisfaction with life. Statistical results were analyzed to determine if positive and negative correlations existed between the measures, and if differences in the relationships between these factors associated well-being were indicated. Findings indicated those who respond in a more self-compassionate way to stressors scored significantly higher on self-reported resilience (n=139). There was a significant inverse relationship between self-compassion and self-esteem, as well as an inverse relationship between self-esteem and resilience. A significantly positive relationship between self-compassion and psychological flexibility was also indicated. Directly studying the link between resilience and self-compassion, as well as specifically how this relationship differs from that with self-esteem, further clarifies self-compassion's benefits and protective functions. A more precise understanding of the construct aids effective utilization within mental health treatment.
