Most studies have explored the basic emotions such as happy, sad, and anger. Little research has been done on self-conscious emotions such as shame, guilt, and pride. While there is some research in adults, there is a paucity of research when looking at children and adolescents. These emotions have been linked with mood disorders in adults.

This study investigates the impact of CBT group on the experience of shame, guilt, and pride. This study also aims to explore the relationship between self-conscious emotions and mood disorders in healthy versus affected individuals. 73 adolescents (ages 11-17) with affective disorders participated in the CBT treatment group. Participants completed the Shame, Guilt, and Pride scale (SGSS) scale assessing current levels of shame, guilt, and pride. Paired samples T Tests revealed significant decreases in endorsed guilt and pride after participation in group therapy. While there were no clinically significant differences in shame, results were trending in the right direction. Taken together, these findings suggest that CBT group therapy can improve the experience of mood disorders and self-conscious emotions such as guilt. Given the strong social influence in the experience of self-conscious emotions, future studies should consider more targeted social interventions to help cope with dysregulated self-conscious emotions.
