While there is an extensive research base for interventions for children with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (HFASDs) occurring during the school year, there is a scarcity of research that examines summer interventions. This study involved the investigation of 11 campers with HFASDs while they attended an eight-week long summer camp that included a behavioral management component and social cognition lessons. The investigators explored whether participating campers experienced increases in "expected" or prosocial behaviors, decreases in "unexpected" or maladaptive social behaviors, and an overall reduction in social impairment after attending the camp. Data were collected during Direct Behavior Observations (DBOs), and from parent and counselor Social Responsiveness Scales-Second Version (SRS-2). The results of the study showed that campers experienced a significant cumulative increase in expected behaviors from the start to the end of the summer, and a significant reduction of unexpected behaviors during the second half of camp. In addition, parents and counselors reported a significant decline in campers' autism symptoms on the SRS-2 from the start to the end of the summer. The current study evidences that children with HFASD experienced significant improvements in their prosocial behaviors, maladaptive social behaviors, and autism consistent behaviors after partaking in a summer camp for children with social needs.
