This study addressed the research problem of limited knowledge of social service professionals about the social, emotional, and mental health needs of infants. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of professional knowledge pertaining to the needs of infants in one county in Iowa. Participants consisted of professionals who worked in social services in the county: social workers, A "guardian ad litem" (GAL), pediatricians, family service workers, and mental health therapists. The research method of participatory action research (PAR) allowed for data collection from a combination of 31 surveys and a focus group of six participants. The study had some limitations, such as, nongeneralizability and the absence of a quantitative component to explore or expand the qualitative aspects of the data. Data analysis consisted of an open coding process of the transcripts from the focus group and survey data. This process led to the analysis of the data through categorization into ideas and categories of the theme. Coding revealed the underlying idea of the theme or category. The main conclusion of the study was that participants were not equipped with a high level of knowledge about infant mental health needs. The study suggested that infant mental health is not a significant issue at the state or local (county) level that garners resources and attention. The results demonstrated the importance of ensuring that professionals are aware and supportive of early mental health intervention. Early intervention can prevent a lifetime of challenges.
