Involvement in risky behavior has been thought of as something that children will grow out of as they get older. Research has shown that is not always the case. Late adolescents and emerging adults are frequently involved in risk related behaviors. The focus of this study was to examine factors that influence "adolescent' decision making in relation to participation in risk taking behaviors. This was achieved by investigating the role of parenting styles and information processing in risk related decision making. In addition, this study explored concepts of locus of control and impulsiveness due to their theoretical influence on risk behavior in late adolescents and emerging adults. The findings in the current study indicated that Authoritative Parenting and rational thinking positively correlated with better perception of risk. It was also found to have a positive influence on experiential thinking. Authoritative Parenting and Experiential thinking were positively correlated with performance on the Iowa Gambling Task. Permissive parenting was found to have a negative correlation with how risk is perceived. In addition, rational thinking was found to be positively correlated with low impulsiveness and internal locus of control. Impulsivity and locus of control were positively correlated with involvement in risk taking activities. An exploratory analysis of the four predictor variables found parenting styles, thinking styles, impulsiveness, and locus of control to be significant predictors of risk in relation to be risk involvement and perception of risk. The results suggest that the late adolescents and emerging adults are not solely rational thinkers. In addition, they appear to benefit from the protective factors such as parenting style to influence reduced involvement in unsafe activities.
