Whether there is scientific evidence valuing the use of humor in therapy has been a question nagging the psychological community for many years. Humor has been used by counselors for many therapeutic endeavors including assessment, career counseling, and school counseling. Despite this, the problem remains that there has been little empirical research on the specific benefits of humor in psychotherapy (Ventis, Higbee, & Murdock, 2001). Prominent psychologists such as Freud, Frankl, and Ellis have recognized the therapeutic benefits to be derived from using humor within the counseling relationship (Saper, 1987). The therapeutic value of humor in counseling includes strengthening rapport between client and therapist, offering to a client a less painful perspective of a painful experience, adding to a client's social repertoire, and providing a stress control method (Goldin & Bordan, 1999). The use of humor in psychotherapy has been longstanding and is seemingly growing stronger, even though most of these salubrious claims remain essentially untested empirically (Franzini, 2001). Franzini (2001) notes that since it seems indisputable that humor techniques are already being applied, sometimes inappropriately and perhaps harmfully, it is crucial to seek data on their effectiveness. This position underscores the rationale for the importance of this study. The main purpose of this study is to present a quantitative examination of the usefulness of humor as experienced within psychotherapy by clients in a psychological services clinic. This research addresses two main questions: Does the working alliance become stronger the more the therapist uses humor? And, Does the use of humor in therapy lead to reduced symptom distress levels in clients?
