The purpose of this study was to examine the spatial behavior of residents in Taipei, Taiwan, a city whose compact spatial structure, Chinese cultural background and level of economic development are different from those of American cities and, to a lesser extent, those of large cities of Southeast Asian countries in the mid-1970s. Two sets of data were used in this study. The first set consisted of demographic and socioeconomic variables provided by the Municipal Government of Taipei, whereas the second set included trip purposes by origin and destination obtained from a 1975 transportation survey conducted by the Transportation Planning Board, Ministry of Communications, Republic of China.

To investigate the residential spatial structure of Taipei City, the set of demographic and socioeconomic data was used as input to factor analysis. The results indicated that socioeconomic status was the main factor which has determined the residential spatial structure of the city. In terms of the spatial patterns of residences of various socioeconomic groups, the city of Taipei possessed characteristics of both industrial and preindustrial cities. Some upper status families occupied the core, suggesting a preindustrial city characteristic, while others have moved out of the core of the city, an indication of the evolution of industrial city characteristics. However, the limited amount of land for urban expansion and low private car ownership encouraged them to locate their residences in the middle portion of the city along major arterials that emanate from the core. The periphery of the city was occupied by agricultural and rural-low economic groups as well as single adults.

The second set of data was organized into two 98 x 98 origin-destination matrices to represent the spatial interactions of work and non-work trip purposes, respectively. The major interaction dimensions of the city were obtained by factor analyzing these two matrices. The results of analyzing the work matrix indicated work trips were tied to the CBD, the Major Administrative Center, secondary commercial centers, and industrial centers of different levels of importance. Most work trips were short, from adjacent zones. By contrast, the non-work trip dimensions were tied to residential areas and some special functional sites, such as medical center. Distance was not as critical for these trips as for work trips. There was no positive relationship between socioeconomic status of travelers and distance traveled as revealed by studies on Western cities. In addition, more than 50 percent of spatial interactions of the city was attributed to the residential locations of professional workers, unskilled laborers, and single adults.

Two basic concepts on the nature of the urbanization process have been postulated: the existence of a universal, common experience or divergent paths in the urban experiences of many countries. The results of this study would appear to support the value of the second concept in the theory of urban growth and change.
