Gender roles and socialization of males and females as infants/children, along with life experiences contribute to the shaping of the expression of emotions. I examined gender roles in the Chinese culture and its impact on emotional expression within romantic relationships. Eighteen Chinese and Chinese- American college students completed the Vancouver Index of Acculturation Scale (VIA), Emotional Expressivity Scale (EES) and the Relationship Structures Questionnaire. The theoretical framework was John Bowlby's attachment theory; this theory explores an individual's experiences with the emotional availability of one's attachment figures and the way it shapes their feelings of self-security and trust in others (Bowlby, 1980). The researcher predicted that Chinese Americans would express more positive emotions towards their romantic partner, while Chinese immigrants would express fewer emotions towards their partner. Results indicated both hypotheses lacked support due to the limited amount of responses and small sample size. Further research is necessary with a larger sample size to determine the impact emotional expression has on romantic relationships in the Chinese culture.
