Objective: This study was designed to explore the relationships of parenting daily hassles, parental stress, and depression in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among parents in Hong Kong. There has been limited research in Hong Kong regarding the needs of parents of children with ASD. Method: Eighty-three parents of children with autism between 2 and 12 years old completed a set of self-report questionnaires, including a demographic questionnaire, the Mark Autism Severity Test (MAST) to determine autism severity, Parenting Daily Hassles PDH to measure daily challenges parenting a child with autism, the Chinese Beck Inventory (C-BDI-II) to measure depression, and the Chinese Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (C-PSI-SF) to measure stress. Results: It was shown that the degree of autism of the child significantly correlated with daily parenting hassles, stress, and depression. Findings also revealed gender differences with regard to parents' perceived parenting daily hassles, parental depression, and parental stress. However, under the influence of parental daily hassles, depression did not moderate parental stress. Also the level of income and education was not found to be a significant influence on parenting daily hassles, parental stress, and depression in parents. Finally, fathers demonstrated significant parenting daily hassles and depression in male offspring, whereas mothers presented statistically significant concerns across parenting daily hassles, parental depression, and parental stress when parenting boys. With female offspring, mothers reported only significant parenting daily hassles and no stress or depression. Conclusions: The need for parents to have a better understanding of autism so they can use more constructive parenting methods is indicated. Also, Chinese traditional values in child raising and parental expectations may shed light on why mothers would show significant parenting stress and depression when parenting boys but not girls. Further research is recommended with larger sample sizes and qualitative research designs.
