Objective: As Chinese place much emphasis on achievements, Chinese children often have a very high need for achievement which may lead to mental health problems. Thus, the present study investigated the relationships between need for achievement and self-esteem as well as anxiety in Chinese children. Method: Eighty-four local governmental primary school students in Hong Kong aged from 6 to 8 participated in the study. Each student filled out questionnaires regarding achievement issues and completed an apperception test. Results: As predicted for girls, a significant curvilinear relationship was found between need for achievement and self-esteem, with the quadratic solution for the relationship being R2 = .33, F(1, 42) = .29, p = .002 and eta = .68. With respect to boys, however, this relationship was found to be linear, r(39) = .31, p = .05. In addition, for girls, significant linear relationships were obtained between need for achievement and social phobia (beta = -.36, po = .01), panic/agoraphobia (beta = -.34, p = .02), physical injury fear (beta = -.30, p < .05) and generalized anxiety (beta = -.40, p < .01). For boys, however, only panic/agoraphobia was significantly related to need for achievement (beta = .33, p <.05). Differences regarding need for achievement between boys and girls were found to be not significant. Conclusion: Parents should exercise appropriate caution when encouraging young girls to attain a high status in academic disciplines. Realistic expectations should be set and positive affirmations should be provided. Proper attention to the mental health of children is urged.
