This study sought to understand the development of parental identity among adolescents and also to explore contributing factors and experiences that may influence the individual's decision of becoming a parent in the future. The study was designed and conducted as a qualitative study on adolescents, ages 14 through 18 years. Participants were engaged in a semi-structured interview, responded to some possible parenting scenarios, and were also asked to respond to selected cards from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) for the purpose of understanding both conscious and unconscious views of parenting. Responses were collected in order to identify themes and then compare them with Erik Erikson's and James Marcia's identity development theories (Erikson, 1950; Erikson, 1968; Erikson, 1980; Erikson,1987; Erikson, 1997; Marcia, 1966; Marcia, 1980; Marcia, J. E., Waterman, A. S.,Matteson, D. R., Archer, S. L., & Orlofsky, J., 1993). The findings of the study revealed that this middle- to upper-middle class sample reported an interest in becoming parents in the future. They consider completing college, having a career, and being financially stable before becoming a parent. Many have in interest in maintaining the parenting style of their own parents, while also being open to changing those styles as appropriate for their children. Some participants expressed their preference to not have children. Overall, participants reported that the choice to become a parent is their own. The participants demonstrated that they have given thought to becoming parents in the future.
