Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the coping styles of the elderly in Hong Kong to help shed light on factors of adjustment and improve their quality of life. Method: One hundred forty community-dwelling senior adults completed questionnaires about their psychological states (Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale [DASS]), coping mechanisms (Ways of Coping Questionnaire [WOCQ]), and social network (Lubben Social Network Scale [LNSS]). A MANOVA was performed to test the study's hypotheses and understand the effect of demographic variables on the study's measures. Results: There were significant differences in the coping mechanisms of the young elderly group (aged 65-75) and the advanced elderly group (aged 76--85), with the older group using more avoidant styles of coping, such as distancing, than the younger group. The younger group, as well as those with higher education levels and those who were employed, tended to use more active, approach oriented styles of coping, such as planful problem solving, seeking social support, and positive reappraisal than the older group. The advanced elderly group also scored significantly higher on depression than the younger group. This is in keeping with past research on avoidant styles of coping being associated with emotional distress. Indeed, the results of Pearson correlations showed that elderly individuals who used confrontive coping and avoidant coping strategies of distancing, self-controlling, and escape avoidance, were more likely to report stress, anxiety, and depression than ones who used the more approach oriented strategies. Although confrontive coping is considered in the literature to be an approach oriented coping strategy, in this study, the relative scores WOCQ of confrontive coping showed a weak correlation with stress, a nonsignificant correlation with anxiety, and a negative correlation with anxiety. Conclusions: Continued research is suggested to understand the role of confrontive coping in elderly Asian populations, to evaluate the causality of the relationships between the variables in this study, and to include other variables that may have influenced coping strategies, such as personality and quantity and type of stressors. However, the results offer avenues for future research and for designing interventions aimed to improve the quality of life of elders living in Hong Kong.
