Despite recent advances, gay men and LGBTQ people continue to be marginalized within U.S. society. According to various social indicators, gay men are disproportionately stigmatized and discriminated against due to their cultural identity and sensibilities (Singh & Durso, 2017). In examining those cultural sensibilities, much of the traditional academic research has been hostile, harmful, or dismissive towards gay men. Where the academic treatment has been more benign, research on gay culture has been fairly one-dimensional and has covered gay cultural values tangentially, focusing primarily on topics such as identity formation, epidemiology, or social stigmatization (Iudici & Verdecchia, 2015).

In order to free gay ethnography from this restrictive paradigm and illuminate and better understand the cultural experience of gay men, this study sought to determine the fundamental cultural values of gay men, using the cultural analysis framework developed by Edgar Schein (2017). His cultural analysis framework examines culture at three levels: cultural artifacts or observable phenomena, espoused values or ideologies within the community, and basic values, or the unspoken assumptions that people may have about their community. Twenty-six leaders and allies in the San Francisco Bay Area were interviewed to determine the cultural values of gay men. The study participants represented multiple artistic, social, health, recreational, and political organizations, interests, and initiatives. Based on the data, the fundamental cultural values of the gay community were: 1) justice, 2) authenticity, 3) verve, 4) resilience, 5) sex positivity, 6) perceptiveness, and 7) inter-connectedness, and provide a context for further research in this area.
