The term "autism awareness" has been coined ubiquitously, yet to date peer-reviewed research has not operationally defined this construct. With the growing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder, awareness has improved, but what is autism awareness, and how can it be measured? If we are to improve autism awareness in evidence-based ways, we must first come to a consensus regarding its definition. Only then can research develop evidence-based tools and explore and improve awareness across populations. The body of previous research on autism awareness has implied inconsistent definitions by referring synonymously to autism awareness and constructs such as perceptions, knowledge, beliefs, or attitudes. It has been established that there is a link between autism knowledge and attitudes toward individuals with autism, but it is unclear whether additional constructs are involved in autism awareness. This study proposed a comprehensive operational definition of autism awareness, consisting of knowledge about autism, experience with individuals with autism, and attitudes toward individuals with autism. The Autism Awareness Scales were developed based on the proposed definition, and the scales were piloted on a sample of public school staff. The data were used to establish initial psychometrics for the Autism Awareness Scales, and to analyze the relationship between autism knowledge, experience, and attitudes. The results confirmed a positive relationship between autism knowledge and attitudes toward individuals with autism. It was also found that the quality of a person's previous experience with individuals with autism affects the relationship between knowledge and attitudes. With this information, research might now use these definitions, scales, and findings to validate and extend research as it relates to analysis and advocacy of autism awareness.
