This dissertation is a theoretical study dealing with Freud's approach to dream interpretation in light of current writings on psychoanalysis as a hermeneutic and/or narrative study. The development of Freud's approach to interpretation is shown and critiqued. It is shown that much of Freud's approach to dream interpretation was prefigured in writings just prior to 1900. With the dream book, Freud presented his official view of interpretation. This is critiqued insofar as it provides an essentially formal understanding of the dream, and cannot specify the deepest level of dream content. The Irma dream serves as an example. The 'general' approach, as embodied in writings on symbolism, sexuality and universal fantasies, does supply a theory of dream content. Its use is illustrated in the interpretation of Dora's first dream and the Wolf Man's wolf dream. Through this study, grounds are presented for arguing that psychoanalysis is a hermeneutic in which certain preconceived narratives play a central role in the process of understanding dreams (and by extension, other psychical productions, such as symptoms and slips of the tongue). The possibility of validating this kind of knowledge is also considered. The main authors discussed here are Paul Ricoeur, Roy Schafer and Jurgen Habermas.
