A cognitive approach will be described in terms of its commitment to the role embodiment plays in cognition, generalization of cognitive processes, prototypicality, and the encyclopedic nature of language. The works of Giles Fauconnier and Mark Turner on conceptual blending, David Herman on narrative as a tool of mind, and Patrick Colm Hogan on transcultural narrative prototypes will be especially useful in developing a cognitive approach to narrative, and later to theology. Theologically, a cognitive approach to narrative and theology will find support in three central Christian stories. The creation of Adam and Eve, the incarnation, and the resurrection will ground embodiment starting points in understanding human cognition.

Acts 27 will serve as a helpful test case for a cognitive approach to narrative and theology. In the process of using a cognitive hermeneutic on Paul's shipwreck, special attention will be given to how the story intersects with the classical accounts of Odysseus and Aeneas, the accounts' membership among the "we" passages of Acts, and how Luke plays off two transcultural narrative prototypes: sacrifice and heroic tragi-comedy.

A literature review schematizing theological approaches to narrative via a cognitive framework will be conducted as a way of defining theology for the approach and dialoging with other approaches to theology of narratives, particularly the work of Hans Frei and Paul Ricoeur. Four conceptual metaphors are offered by a cognitive approach to theology of narrative: narrative as container, as substance, as tool, and as calibrator. After describing a theology of Acts 27, this thesis will advocate for four core dynamics---also calibrated by Acts 27---in a cognitive approach to theologizing: modality, perspectivality, emotionality, and transculturality. A cognitive approach to theology is also open to narrative formations of theologizing as a way of embracing those four qualities, as the final chapter will illustrate.
