This dissertation is an attempt to show the literary and theological functions that Matt 27:45--54 performs within the Matthean narrative. This dissertation will follow the "Story Line Development of the Matthean Narrative" adapted from Jonathan Pennington's "Story Line Development." According to the six-part division of the Matthean narrative, this study traces the development of the plot and Christological motifs throughout the Matthean narrative and presents Matt 27:45--54 as the forward-looking climax of the Matthean narrative.

On the basis of the understanding of the Matthean narrative's structure, this project examines the function of this climactic passage, respectively, in terms of the Matthean Christology, salvation history, and apocalyptic eschatology. By developing christological titles and motifs throughout the Matthean narrative and bringing them---by subsuming other christological titles under the Son of God title---to culmination in Matt 27:45--54, Matthew presents Matt 27:45--54 as the forward-looking climax of his Christology that paves the way for the ecclesiological application in Matt 28:16--20. By disclosing the relationship between Matt 10:5--6, 15:24, 27:54, and 28:16--20, that is, by investigating the meaning of the salvation-historical shift from particularism at the time of Jesus (Matt 10:5--6; 15:24) to universalism at the time of the church (Matt 28:16--20), this dissertation reveals that Matt 27:45--54 is not only the salvation-historical climax but also the salvation-historical shifting point. By observing the intertextual relationship between Matt 27:45--54 and the preceding Jewish apocalyptic passages within the OT and Second Temple Jewish works, this study contends that Matthew uses the preceding Jewish apocalyptic texts to efficiently present Matt 27:45--54 as the forward-looking apocalyptic-eschatological climax, where Matthean apocalyptic motifs reach their culmination, on the one hand, and the eschatological indicative prepares for the imperative in Matt 28:16--20, on the other hand.

In conclusion, Matt 27:45--54 as the forward-looking theological climax of his narrative in terms of his Christology, salvation history, and apocalyptic eschatology shows that Jesus' life was the life of the obedient Son of God who died and rose again in order to save his covenant people from their sins.
