In a wireless channel, we encounter several problems like interference, reduced spectrum efficiency etc. which makes the system less reliable. In our thesis, we made an analysis of performance of different modulation schemes using Software Defined Radios. An analysis is conducted to study the properties of indoor wireless channel conditions over large time scales ranging over several minutes. Long term time dynamics exist in many different situations even when transmitters and receivers are stationary and even distance between them is only few meters. Software Defined Radios provide an inexpensive approach for engineering problems and paves the way for its use in academics and research. We implemented our work using two Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) kits which are tested in different conditions.

The main advantage of using a Software Defined Radio over the traditional radios is that they can be reconfigured on the go. A plethora of experiments can be performed on a single device unlike the traditional device. Owing to its user-friendly nature SDR is being used by many hobbyists, researchers, and academicians.

Our primary goal is to perform an analysis on the usage of SDR with different modulation schemes and to compare the results of Bit Error Rate vs. Packets received for each of the modulation scheme for an indoor (laboratory) environment. We worked in indoor and outdoor environments: Laboratory, Hallway and in a quadrangle structured outdoor environments. Factors like free space path loss and electromagnetic interference where discussed and seen as a possible cause for the behavior of radios. For this research, we used GNU radio which runs on Linux as a simulation tool to control the USRP hardware. We used the benchmarking tool in the GNU Radio that defines and modifies modulation schemes, transmitter and receiver gains, operating frequencies and other channel parameters. We measured and observed a series of interesting time dynamics of BER over several minutes that are not commonly studied in the literature.
