We are embedded within elaborate networks of information. Much of what we need to know is not stored internally but outsourced to other minds and technologies. The current studies explore the consequences of distributed knowledge and demonstrate that the strategies used to access the community of knowledge lead to systematic distortions and illusions of knowledge. One line of work explores the consequences of reliance on the Internet and suggests that it leads to unrecognized gaps in knowledge and disengagement from learning. A second line of work examines a novel heuristic, dubbed the binary bias, which simplifies the process of summarizing conflicting information, but leads to distorted summaries of evidence. Lastly, a third line of work shows how explicit mastery of outside information through formal education can lead to metacognitive errors. These findings highlight several important downstream consequences of the division of cognitive labor.
