This research focuses on expression of emotion and perceptions of emotion in close relationships. The results of a first set of two studies show that people's willingness to express both positive and negative emotion is positively linked to perceptions of partners' care for them. An additional investigation addresses the question of how romantic partners feel about their relationship as result of their partners expressing emotion to them and as a result of their partners expressing emotion to other people. Greater perceptions of emotion expression within one's own relationship are linked to stronger feelings of relationship satisfaction, whereas greater perceptions of emotion expression to other people, outside one's own relationship, are linked to weaker feelings of relationship satisfaction. A third set of studies investigates partners' perceptions of each other's recently felt emotions. People accurately perceive a wide variety of their partners' positive and negative recently felt emotions. Yet they also project their own recently felt emotions onto their partners. Surprisingly, whether or not people believe that they have intentionally expressed their emotions did not predict the level of accuracy or bias in their partners' perceptions of their emotion. Implications for understanding the functioning of emotion processes in the context of close relationships are discussed.
