This dissertation investigates the main causes of the word order variations across Chinese dialects. Four types of causes are addressed from the perspectives of common morphosyntactic changes, sources of grammatical forms, representation of meanings, and language contact.

First, the formation of the resultative construction and its morphosyntactic effects are by no means synchronized developments across all the Chinese dialects. Thus, three constructions are favored by various southern dialects in constructing a basic sentence with a resultative, i.e., the SVOR construction, the SVRO construction, and the STVR construction, all of which are used in compensation for the lack of a highly grammaticalized disposal construction. Most southern dialects maintains the VO+PP construction, a subtype of the VOR construction, to express spatial meanings. Besides, the post-verbal aspect markers in Wu and Min dialects are less grammaticalized and thus show a very different word order typology.

Second, the word order of any grammatical form is determined by its source and developments. The progressive marker zhe has post-verbal "zhe+locative" construction as its lexical source in many northwestern dialects. The disyllabic source of the progressive marker zhe slows its morphologizing process and leaves it less fused with the verb, which explains its current word order in "VO+zhe". Moreover, the word order patterns of the three potential-resultative constructions across Chinese dialects are not only determined by their source forms but also pressed into changes by analogical factors in their later developments.

Third, the post-verbal modifiers in many southern dialects are different forms in representing certain meanings compared with most northern dialects. Southern dialects prefer to have the quantitative meaning of an action verb expressed by its resultative, such as tian/cou, duo/shǎo, and guo, which is pre-conditioned by their less fused resultative construction. The post-verbal modifier kuai has its lexical source as a predicate and grammaticalizes into a temporal marker in most Wu dialects. The Cantonese adverb xian underwent a word order change from "xian +VP" to "VP+xian " between 1920s and 1950s, which was motivated by the need to differentiate with its newly emerged pre-verbal usage.

Fourth, the word order changes from SVO to SOV in some western dialects are induced by language contact. I hypothesize that three intertwined mechanisms are the most important internal enabling factors. Contact-induced grammaticalization contributes to the establishment of a case marking system in those dialects and it works together with pragmatic unmarking to develop a marked STV pattern into an unmarked SOV syntax. Besides, construction type shift introduces new word orders to the copula construction.

This dissertation presents a number of important empirical and theoretical advances in Chinese linguistics. Empirically, this analysis, based on data from nearly 200 dialects, gives a diachronic explanation on the most outstanding word order variations across Chinese dialects. Theoretically, it is a diachronic approach to account for the grammatical variations in Chinese dialects. The four perspectives proposed are also applicable to the wider investigation into the evolution of Chinese dialectal grammars.
