Two years of research among the Meratus Dayaks of southeastern Borneo provides the basis for an account that is both an ethnography and a demonstration of the analytic possibilities of a framework that highlights multiple layers of political process. Each of three parts examines the interaction of cultural commitments, political strategies and institutional arrangements in a particular context of Meratus social life. The dissertation challenges pervasive anthropological assumptions of cultural autonomy and integrity to stress instead the significance of local heterogeneity as well as extra-local integration in the development of Meratus culture.

The first part looks as how regional and ethnic politics contribute to the "internal" dynamics of Meratus culture. I show how asymmetric trading relations, administration, and national religious debate have each been involved in the development of Meratus tradition. I illustrate how Meratus leaders use a rhetoric of regional authority to legitimate local power. Finally, I demonstrate how conceptions of land rights have been differentially shaped by varying forms of local-regional articulation.

The second part explores the Meratus "social landscape" as an analytic frame that brings together social and ecological aspects of subsistence, personal and community histories, and local understandings of geography. Instead of analytically isolating swidden farming, I show the integration of swidden with other forms of economic activity, including forest use and market-oriented production. Furthermore, an understanding of both the internal form and the long-term dynamics of swidden-making "families" requires an analysis not just of swidden but of the articulation of swidden and other economic sectors.

The third part brings a concern for political process to questions about kinship, gender, and leadership. Cultural commitments to kinship are shown as important aspects of both customary law and "family" labor arrangements. At the same time, an analysis of politics at work illuminates both the power and the limitations of these kinship commitments. Extensive case studies bring out the significance of personal histories and inter-neighborhood relationships in community politics.

In respectively displacing kinship structure, swidden requirements, and cultural unity from center stage, each part suggests a more complex analytic alternative, recognizing disagreement, poltical tension, and change.
