While the number of women in leadership continues to steadily increase across most industries, it stands as an anomaly the same does not hold true in the information technology industry. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore reasons why women are underrepresented in information technology leadership positions. A multiple case study research design with multiple embedded units of analysis was chosen to fully identify the barriers and experiences of the women in information technology leadership positions. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with ten women who hold or have held leadership positions in the information technology industry and have experienced barriers in their plight to leadership. Data were inductively coded then subjected to a thematic analysis procedure. NVivo 11 for Mac was utilized to evaluate the data and maintain rigor through recording the decisions made while evaluating the data. The gender barriers identified most by the participants in this study were: Gender Barrier/Gender Bias, Gender Barrier/Glass Ceiling, and Gender Barrier/Gender Stereotype. Despite an increase in the number of educated women in the workforce, women leaders experienced the identified gender related barriers that impacted their plight to leadership in the information technology industry. The participants explained that women are not always accepted as equal peers to men and struggle to be recognized for their work. All of the participants spoke of the significant gender related barriers they experienced and discussed how women are not often expected in the role of leadership, as supported by the Role Congruity theory. Organizations can benefit from training their leaders to recognize the qualified individuals for positions, regardless of gender, while fostering an organization that does not tolerate gender barriers as discussed in this research.
