Law enforcement and social worker interactions are a topic of recent discussion. More often, the media publicizes the flaws in investigations of child maltreatment by social workers, but fails to mention the intricate role law enforcement plays during the investigative process. Current research has failed to assess the quality of collaboration of joint investigations between social workers and law enforcement from a social worker's perspective. The purpose of this research was to determine through a quantitative research methodology just how social workers perceive the collaborative efforts when working with law enforcement. This study hypothesized that the perceptions of social workers would be impacted by gender, geographical location and years within the social services field. This study hypothesized that these perceptions would be impacted by factors associated with the quality of collaboration. Finally, this study hypothesized that the identified factors of collaboration could predict the perceptions of social workers. The hypotheses in this study were viewed through quantitative methods that determined predictions, correlations, and relationships between the variables. Upon conclusion of this study, it was revealed social workers from the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States perceived an increased quality collaboration more than other geographical regions. Additionally, it was concluded that the following collaboration factors: member characteristics, purpose, process, and structure were significant indicators of the perception of the quality of collaboration. The findings of this study revealed a current need for law enforcement and child welfare agencies to review the interactions between agencies when involved in collaborative efforts.
