Although previous research has implied that stepmothers and mothers have difficulty co-parenting, it has focused primarily on non-residential stepmothers and secondarily on residential stepmothers. In contrast, this qualitative study is the first to focus exclusively on stepmothers' co-parenting experience with the biological mother in joint custody families. Eight White heterosexual middle to upper class stepmothers with higher education identified major and minor themes that are encompassed by three major categories: conflict, power dynamics, and resolution. Central findings include stepmothers' (a) struggles with the mother-father-stepmother relationship triangle, (b) internal struggles with her role, (c) perception of the mother as holding the power, and (d) view of themselves as powerless. Results also suggest that stepmothers in joint custody families undergo a five-phase process of adapting to an unexpectedly complex stepfamily system. It is suggested that future stepfamily research continues to examine joint custody families, especially the experiences and perceptions of mothers and stepmothers; and that clinical interventions be based on awareness of the growing research about stepfamilies.
