School social workers exist at the forefront of helping students who have been identified as homeless. Homeless students that have "fallen through the cracks," are often overlooked, labeled, and not given the academic attention needed to become successful. The results of this qualitative action research study revealed five themes: 1) communication, 2) parental involvement, 3) extra support, 4) tutoring, and 5) lack of educator training/knowledge. Practical strategies were developed for teachers and administrators that specifically identified homeless students. Additionally, parents were linked to community resources within and outside the school setting that allowed them to become active participants in their children's education. Coupled with the linkage to community resources, identified homeless students were linked to mentors for further support. Furthermore, yearly in-services for teachers and administrators were implemented. Information was gathered from 20 participants, which consisted of 12 experienced elementary teachers, six veteran school administrators, and two school social workers. Collectively, these adults are responsible for providing intervention services to promote academic success, as well as social and emotional supports during times of crisis. Methods of data collection included interviews, focus groups, and field notes. This action research project has professional implications for social workers and educators who are making a contribution to improve learning for academically struggling students. Particularly, targeting homeless students who are motivated toward increasing academic achievement. The implications may eliminate gaps between the school, parents, and the community, thereby strengthening educational opportunities for homeless students.
