Though psychologists have closely studied grieving children, this research has primarily focused on the experiences of children facing a single loss, typically of a parent. While the research on childhood grief is comprehensive, there exists a large gap in relation to the experiences of parentless children, of which there are nearly three million in the United States alone. These children have a greater chance of exhibiting symptoms of childhood traumatic grief (CTG) due to the increased incidence of secondary adversities that present as a result of becoming parentless. Furthermore, these children are often placed in the custody of their grandparents, who subsequently struggle with second-time parenting as well as their own grief reactions. Cohen and colleagues have created a modified approach to Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to meet the needs of children with traumatic grief; the model additionally encompasses a strong parent component. However, this treatment model includes little to no recommendations for clinicians working with the subset of children who have lost both parental figures and are being raised by their grandparents. This dissertation aims to address this gap in the literature through modifying the TF-CBT for CTG protocol to meet the needs of parentless children and their custodial grandparents.
