This dissertation explores cancer advocacy, focusing specifically on effective advocacy methods for oneself and others when there is a cancer diagnosis. This dissertation first provides an explanation of the context surrounding this inquiry, including the researcher's relationship to the topic. Next, the theoretical framework is presented along with an examination of conceptual tools and models that incorporates relevant literature from public health, creative arts, healing alternatives, psychology of health, and health advocacy methods. The examination is framed to support an arts-based method of developing tools for training that will support advocacy and decision-making when a person is affected by cancer or other serious illness. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a theoretical foundation for an original play, The Cancer Chronicles. The Cancer Chronicles is designed as an original and unique arts-based intervention that encapsulates five different stories of cancer from very diverse backgrounds to showcase various advocacy techniques and distinctive to each situation. The Cancer Chronicles brings multiple perspectives and a variety of experiences that allow for a deeper understanding of an individual's behavior and the advocacy needed for their own situation.
