Problem: Medical students (MS) are experiencing higher levels of sleep deprivation and anxiety as compared to the general public. This affects many aspects of their lives, including their physical health that manifests in problems such as high blood pressure and greater propensity for chronic illness and their mental and emotional health that exhibits in problems such as attempting to withdraw from social contact and suicidal thoughts. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine if the cofactors of sex of the MS, year in medical school, and relationship status (married or not married) had any effect on sleep deprivation and anxiety in MS. Also, the data from this study can be used by medical university administrators to create programs to help address these problems. Participants: MS from two medical schools; 1st, 2nd, 3 rd, and 4th years. Methods: A population or census study was used to gather data from both medical schools. Students had the option of completing the Sleep Deprivation and Anxiety Scale (SDASS). REDCap was used to create the SDASS and to gather the data. The latest version of SPSS was used to analyze the data. Results: Sleep deprivation was not affected by any of the co-factors of this study: year in school, sex of the MS, or relationship status of the MS. Anxiety was affected by the year in school and by the sex of a MS, but was not affected by the relationship status of the MS. MS in their 3rd year had less anxiety than the other years; females had more anxiety than males. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation was unaffected by any of the cofactors in this study. Anxiety was affected by year in school and the sex of the MS.
